Young hostel near the lagoon
Chez Papaye is a youth hostel, located 500 meters from the lagoon, where people can swim and snorkel, seeing the big turtle if they are lucky enough. It is a place that gives the feeling of home, accommodating 12 people, in 2 dormitories of 4 people and 2 double rooms. On the island of micro-climates, where temperature can reach peaks very hard to handle, it is important to mention that all sleeping places have air conditioning.
The common areas consist of a living room, a terrace and a garden, suitable for working. You can choose between desks, couches or sun decks to get your job done, whereas Papaye, the cat of the hostel, might give you a visit from time to time.
Breakfast is included (and it is DELICIOUS!),as well as bed sheets and towels, and lunch and dinner is available at very attractive prices. The food is made daily by the owners and it includes local meals. Bikes, table tennis, ping-pong balls and climbing equipment are available on site.
The hosts know the island well and are happy to guide newcomers and share the experiences of the most initiated.
Reunion island is a French overseas department, located in the Indian ocean, between Madagascar and Mauritius. It is a small piece of land, with altitudes between 0m and 3000m, reason why it is a hiking paradise, as well as a good place for diving, swimming with dolphins or whales and surfing. The island is known for being the place with the most micro-climates in the world and it has a long history of slavery, that people are trying to burry at the moment. However, nowadays, there is a feeling of freedom, peace and acceptance that I rarely found in other places.
Prices start at € 28 per night per person. It is available on Booking.

“Chez Papaye is perfectly suited to the atmosphere of the island. It is located strategically, very close to the beach and a step away from the bus station that could take you at the beginning of the main trails around the island. The breakfast includes home-made jams, made from local fruits and the coffee is much better than the average that I found around.
Hosts are welcoming and our communication was very easy and smooth, even if I do not speak French (trust me, I discovered during my stay on the island that it is not common). Internet connection was very fast and reliable at any time of the day and there were several places where I could work.
Luckily, people who choose Chez Papaye are young and friendly, reason why I left the hostel with friends who made my stay much better on the island”
