3 things to keep in mind when you look for a remote job

October 4, 2021

Looking for a remote job means a lot of changes from the traditional ones. I would call it a lifestyle change. You have the chance to have more flexibility and maybe more money, which means you have more options to build your life as you like.

To do it in the right way, below, you can see three things you need to keep in mind when you are looking for a remote job.

Variety

You have a much larger pool of companies to select. You don't need to search for jobs just in your city. You can search for jobs in the whole country, the whole continent or around the world. You don't have limits now. Enjoy it. It's your chance to work in another organizational culture and try other perspectives about business and how to enjoy your life while working. Also, these companies usually mean openness. To be part of them, you need to be open to new experiences and adaptable. If you are searching for a global employer he may also have employees from all over the world. It means variety from every point of view. It is different to work with an Asian than with an African or European. But if you are open and adaptable, you'll manage it, don't worry.

Finances

Working remotely means you can access jobs from all over the world. On the other side, companies know they can access talent from all over the world. It is good to know it because if your country is a small one, with a not so large economy, you have a good chance to find a company from a richer country which can pay you a higher salary than the ones you would find locally for similar positions. It is both in the company advantage as yours. For them is a good chance to access top talent and reduce fixed costs with salaries. For example, if an American company works remotely, they don't need to work anymore with Americans and pay big salaries as they can access talent from all over the world and pay less but higher than their employees would usually find on the local market. It's a win-win situation. On the other side, if you are a citizen of a rich economic country, you can take into consideration traveling in remote-friendly countries and working at the same time. If you do it right, there is a chance to save money by spending less than you usually do in your home country.

Working styles

Working remotely can mean a lot of things. Some companies allow you to work from anywhere in an asynchronous style. It means just a few meetings just when is necessary. Also, it means a lot of flexibility. You can do whatever you want from wherever you want if you are productive and deliver as expected. If you want to become a digital nomad, these companies are from you. Another category is the companies that ask you for an overlap of 2-4 hours with their headquarter or the rest of the team. You still have a lot of flexibility but you need to be in front of your laptop for specific times during the day. If you don't want to travel just work from home, probably this fits best for you. The third category is the one where your employer asks for a specific time to be available. For example, 9 to 5 on BST timezone if the company is from the United Kingdom. If you are from England, this could sound good for you, but if you have even a two hours difference between your timezone and theirs, it will affect you in the long run. I would not choose this working style as I think we can have more flexibility.
